Red Cross Disaster Management during the COVID-19 Pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Red Cross mobilized 1,500 dedicated volunteers who provided outstanding support across several critical areas:
- Lockdown Enforcement and Public Awareness: Volunteers played a key role in maintaining strict lockdown measures, ensuring compliance and safety within communities. They also facilitated public awareness efforts, using six announcement vehicles and large hoardings, alongside distributing pamphlets to educate people on essential COVID-19 precautions.
- Meal Distribution and Medical Aid: In response to the economic impact, the Red Cross distributed over 55,000 meals to homeless and vulnerable individuals. Free medical support was offered through camps operating for 75 days, providing essential services such as medicines, hygiene kits, and medical supplies. A total of 40,000 masks, 2,500 sanitizers, and 1,000 hygiene kits were distributed at no cost to the public.
- Support for Migrant Workers: In recognition of the struggles faced by migrant workers, the Red Cross arranged free buses and trucks to safely transport them to their home states, including Srikakulam, Odisha, and Vizianagaram. Food and medical facilities were also provided during transit.
- Support at Hospitals and Testing Centers: Volunteers were stationed at government COVID hospitals and testing centers, offering critical assistance to patients and their attendants. They provided water, snacks, and ensured smooth operations, including quick bed allotment within 20 minutes at the reception.
This comprehensive response underscores the commitment and dedication of the Red Cross and its volunteers in providing relief and support during one of the most challenging times in recent history.
